Frequently Asked Questions

When we hire your company who actually does the work?

All work performed at the job site is done by Art and Chuck Hughes.
What measures do you take to control dust?

Before we start any work we install dust control measures that work really well using a combination of exhaust fans, drop cloths, and plastic. This creates a nearly dust-free environment that homeowners rave about. Check out our testimonials page.
How long does the refinishing take?

A complete sand and refinish takes 3-4 days, a screen sand and recoat only takes one day. The amount of time could vary depending on the size of the project and if there are any other factors involved.
What’s the difference between oil based & water based polyurethane?

Oil based finishes bring out the natural color of wood. Water based finishes leave the floor lighter than an oil base finish and has a tendency to reduce the natural color variations of the wood.
Should I select a satin, semi-gloss or gloss finish?

The finish you select for your hardwood floors is what actually brings out the beauty of the wood. Some people prefer a soft satin look while others like a high-gloss finish. We recommend a satin or semi-gloss finish as it shows less traffic patterns than the gloss finish.
How long do we wait before we can walk on a newly refinished floor?

After the floor is dried overnight it is safe to walk on. We suggest that you walk on it in stocking feet for a day or two. Many of our clients choose to routinely remove their shoes when at home and enjoy the feel of the hardwood. However, this is not necessary, but will reduce wear and is a good idea for a few days while the finish is curing.
When can I return furniture to the room?

Allow as much time as possible before moving furniture on a newly refinished floor. We recommend 48 hours while the finish cures and hardens. For people with time constraints moving furniture in the next day is possible.
How often do you recommend recoating?

This depends on how it is cared for and the amount of traffic on the floor. Inspect your floor twice a year and if your floor is dull and showing signs of wear in heavy traffic areas we recommend applying another coat of finish. Recoating is relatively inexpensive with minimal disruption to the household.
Why does my floor shrink or crack?

This frequently occurs in the winter months when our heating systems dry out home construction, and usually corrects itself in the summer months with heat and humidity.
What kind of wax or polish should I use?

The answer is none. Using wax or polish on floors such as Murphy’s Oil Soap, Old English, Liquid Gold, Pledge, Endust, Mop & Glow etc. is not recommended. Using these can reduce the luster of your finish and create a film which will require time-consuming and costly sanding and finishing instead of an economical recoat.
